The Kenai dip net fishing this year did not start out as hot as it did for us last year. It took 3 days and 2 trips to fill the punchcard - 35 for the household. That's a lot of fish! Close to 100 lbs. of fillets.
The crowds waiting patiently for that fish to hit the 5' hoop net. It gets a little cozy when the fishing is slow. Everyone has a secret strategy or extra long pole to give them the edge over the competition. We even saw a guy with wheels on his net. Took him an hour to assemble it though.
There were some real big tides while we were there...not much room on the beach for the tipi at high tide.
Joni was able to get in on the dipping this year. We got several good size reds in the 10 lb. range.
The trick is getting all your fish off the beach through the dry sand once you catch em. Catching them is the easy part...then the work begins.
Took co-worker Chris down for his first dipping session and he got his first one in about 10 seconds. Combined, we got 44 fish in about 2 hours.
Even had some starry flounders in the nets. A few pink salmon and the occasional Chinook as well. You have to release the kings though. It gets interesting when a 40 lb. king hits the net.
