It was operation catch a grayling when we left the house this weekend. They are pretty common in Alaska, but when there's fresh salmon to be had it's easy to pass these little guys up.
We hiked in to Crescent Lake to give it a try...and to get some much needed exercise.
Finally got this hungry sail fin on a black gnat pattern.
Grayling are one of the prettiest fish. In the water this guy had bright blue and green fins, but out of the water the colors aren't quite as noticeable. They are like a cross between a trout and a whitefish (maybe a little mini-marlin mixed in).
Tough to get a good picture without a mosquito on the lens sometimes.
Stopped in Hope to see what was in the creek. Full of pinks! Nice fishing hole about 100 yards from the bar...tough to beat that.
Chunk likes the fish.
Nice male sockeye in early tomato stage.
Fireweed already sprouting up in this year's Funny River burn along the banks of the Kenai.
