Sheep hunt 2015

Ryan drew an any ram sheep tag for a good unit not too far outside of town (by Alaska standards a one hour drive and a 30 minute flight is like a couple of blocks). Joni had just enough time before school started to tag along for the first few days. Flying into sheep camp on the Super Cub.

The little Super Cub with tundra tires could only haul one person at a time, so it took two trips to get in.

The "airstrip."

Base camp for the first two nights before we moved up the valley closer to the sheep.

Daily trip to the water hole to filter.

Relocating camp.

Glassing from the tent in the rain. There's about 5 sheep on the hillside in the background.

One of Joni's little friends - an ermine.

A flock of ptarmigan that almost walked into the tent.

Camp spot #2.

The sheep grounds way up at the top of the valley, about a 2 mile hike from camp.

We passed up quite a few smaller rams and settled on this nice one. By sheep standards not a record-breaker, but a dandy sheep nonetheless. Got him on the second day of the season.

Got him all skinned and quartered and back to the tent by midnight. About 70-80 lbs. of meat total. Plan to do a european-style skull mount. Now it's time to go find Joni a goat, Chunk some ducks,  and see if we can find another moose this year.
