More bears
The bear count is up to about 15 we have seen so far this spring/summer. This sow and cub tried to climb on the ferry near the Russian River on the Kenai. It's pretty rare to see the first year cubs out and about.
They made the fishermen pretty nervous. About 5 minutes earlier the bank was elbow to elbow with combat fishermen. They were catching a few fish, so she figured she could get an easy meal.
One unlucky angler left his freshly caught fish in the water tied to a stringer as he retreated in haste. The sow and cub made a quick meal of that one. Many people pack fish away in a backpack soon after catching to avoid losing their fish to a lazy (smart) and hungry bear.
We saw this young guy the next day while floating down the river. The fish weren't in heavy yet, so the bears were feeding mainly off carcasses thrown into the river by fishermen filleting their catch upstream.
Ryan, the bear, a fisherman and a motorhome - common things on the Kenai River.
A couple of nervous bank fishermen.... It is nice having a boat to retreat into. One of Ryan's coworkers got chased downriver in his pontoon boat in this spot the day before.
